Most of the people I photograph are 'ordinary' people. They're kids, teachers, lawyers, parents, students, musicians, therapists, engineers, healers, and they come in a variety of sizes, ages, and life situations. While I do sometimes shoot with professional models, most of my work is with men and women who have never posed for portraiture before. I've photographed people who have come to my studio for all sorts of reasons: a woman who wanted to make a gift for her husband who was away fighting a war; a 53 year-old man who had just run his first marathon and felt he was in the best shape of his life; teens, about to embark on the Great Adventure of Life; a woman marking the finalization of her divorce; a woman, pregnant with her third child; a man who had beaten cancer, twice; a woman who wanted to make a special, intimate gift for her sweetheart's 40th birthday; a group of three best friends. What they all seem to have in common is a desire to see and express themselves in a new, deeper way. People have always been fascinated with seeing themselves in photographs, but we're mostly accustomed to seeing ourselves in casual snapshots. One woman I photographed told me that when she saw the photographs I took of her, it felt like she had found a mirror that reflected a part of herself that she had never seen before. |
